In no particular order, here’s a rundown of the more interesting parts of our weekend.

  • My baby (4-year-old Amy – not really much of a baby anymore) was proud to ride her “new” bike today.  Hubby/Daddy got the training wheels on my $25 find on Craigslist, which was a preschooler-sized, gently used Trek.  She looked pretty proud!  (And why I didn’t have my camera outside with me defies all logic.)
  • The sailboat sold!  I’m told it’s off to a good home in Minnesota with veteran sailers.  Doesn’t get much more win-win than that.
  • Today was about 84°F.  I should say, early afternoon found us in those summer-like temps.  At the present moment, the wind is howling, and we’re under a tornado watch and soon to be under a severe thunderstorm watch. These are just as significant signs of spring as orange barrels are.
  • Claire and I had The Talk tonight.  I don’t want to violate her privacy much, I can tell you that I was far less nervous than I expected.  When I had this talk with my youngest stepson, I remember trying to hide my hands because I was shaking so hard.  With Claire, I felt a bit like, well, “parts is parts.”  One of the most unexpected aspects of our whole interchange was that my girl wouldn’t look at me.

When I pressed her about this, she told me she didn’t want to grow up.  She was quite emphatic.  I did my best to reassure her that while many things will change, and many things will be new and different, that I was sure that life had a lot of really interesting adventures waiting for her.

It was obvious she didn’t believe me.

But something tells me I’ll have loads of opportunities to remind her.

I’ll spare you the joys of 10 loads of laundry, Kate’s meltdown in Shopko when we couldn’t find her any sandals that fit her, and the dozens of times Claire turned hostile toward one or the other of us.  I can state with all certainty, though, that we were all happy to see warm weather… fresh air, outdoor play, and increased exercise are always welcome additions to this family!

Treasuring the Mundane

May 14, 2010

I have found it very difficult to post lately, as there are a number of things going on in the abc household that I simply cannot write about at this time.  Be glad you can’t know:  you’re escaping much pain and ugliness. A few snippets of my family’s life that I can share with you: [...]
