Nostalgia

June 3, 2011

Do you have a few things that you have all but forgotten about, but then out of the proverbial blue you run across it… and then all those feelings come rushing back?  And how you feel like you’ve just unearthed a little jewel from your past?

I recently had one of these moments.

While driving down I-94 near Kenosha, there is an old-fashioned A&W Root Beer Stand, complete with heavy, frosty mugs of my favorite kind of root beer AND… you can even choose to be served IN YOUR CAR by a car hop!

You see, when I was a little girl, there were a couple of places in the little town where I grew up that you could get “fast food.”  One of them was the Tinkertot, and the other was the A&W Rootbeer Stand.  I’m not sure if it was the fact that I was with my Grampa when I was there, or if the novelty of waiters on roller skates tripped my trigger, but I LOVED that place.

And all those wonderful memories?  They flooded my senses when I saw that A&W right off the freeway last week.

It was about the time we needed a bite to eat, so we decided to see if it was really as fun as it used to be.  In this, I have to give Hubby lots of credit:  he wanted to go inside and eat, but I wanted to order from the car and see if a tray of food could actually successfully hang on my driver’s side window.

Have I mentioned what a good guy Hubby is???

Anyway, I don’t know that the girls were anywhere near as impressed with it as I always was.  Maybe that’s because, living in a metropolitan area, there are fast food options as far as the eye can see.  Maybe they were too tired.

But no matter.  I was in heaven, and my family was putting up with my nostalgia.  What more could a girl ask for!?

Lest you think I’m making this all up, I did take a couple of photos.  (From the driver’s seat of my van with my cell phone – so don’t pay much attention to the quality of these pix.)

Waiting for the Carhop to Pick up

Got a place, an occasion, or something that opens the memory flood gates for YOU?  I’d love to hear your stories – leave a comment or send an email.

Ordinary Thursday #478

September 30, 2010

A sampling of today’s events: Kate rollerskated up and down the sidewalk with her neighborhood friend several times today after school.  Slight chill in the air, but lots of sunshine.  Have I mentioned that fall is my favorite time of year? Kate’s neighborhood friend’s sister, who just turned three, fell off a swing.  While I [...]

Preparing for Memorial Day

May 30, 2010

I am amazed at the number of things I look at differently because I have children.  I didn’t think I was uber-selfish, but the more I age, the more I realize I should rethink that assumption.  I remember in Kindergarten learning the Pledge of Allegiance.  The words didn’t mean much to me; but I felt [...]

Pain

May 28, 2010

I have this ongoing pain in my life, in my family’s life, that never goes away.   Before I launch into this topic, I want to make a couple of things very clear.  First, I am fully cognizant that what I’m about to describe is not unique.  Second, I know there are plenty of pains [...]
