Well Mel,

I can say that i had a similar experience with a muskrat.... they were getting under the house and causing quite a disturbance there. After several attempts to get them out..(traps, guns and knives).. i found one outside and decided to sick the dog on it... That didn't go as planned.. The dog chickened out and i had to take matters into my own hands with a pointed shovel. I was nervous and yes, sadly, i took care of it. In the process of taking care of it, I broke the shovel and also skinned up my hands pretty good. I however do not remember either of the two things happening. I just hope i never have that urge on a human being... pretty sure i wouldn't remember doing it...

PS - I really think your blog is awesome because you tell the unvarnished truth about your life. Don't feel you have to whitewash anything! Most of us need a dose of reality every now and then, pretty or not.

It never ceases to amaze me that some people seem to think that animals are equal to humans and are deserving of the same rights. To their defense, I'm sure at some point in their lives that they were conditioned to believe such nonsense. More disturbing are self-proclaimed Christians who believe this nonsense which contradicts what the Bible itself says about animals. What person in their right would think that it's okay to spend $25,000 to rescue a dog off a sinking tanker while human beings are laying on the streets starving and freezing to death. Some people really have messed up priorities.

Oh for Pete's sake. Though rare, possums can carry rabies. If one is pooping on your deck, that is pretty bold for a rather shy creature. You have every right to get rid of the thing. We think nothing of the news sharing pictures of horrible things with us at noon...and yet this picture is too bloody?

Maybe this won't turn readers away, maybe it will attract them. There is enough politically correct drivel out there. Way to be honest and bold, Mel!

Oh, goodness! Sounds to me like yet another person so far removed from their food sources that your delicate sensibilities are easily upset by reality. Not to mention the fact that I have young children on that deck regularly, and I'd prefer for them to not have a one-on-one encounter with a potentially disease-carrying over-sized rodent. EVER. BTW, I've killed only a couple of animals in my life, and I feel no regret or remorse in the least. Have you heard of that little scientifically proven theory called "Survival of the Fittest"? If not, I suggest you research it. You're gonna need it.

Yes, Jerry, but would that really have sent the desired message to the other wildlife looking to encroach upon my deck? I don't THINK so.

I thought that this would be a cute/funny story about your encounter with a possum. I was very saddened and dismayed to see that all you wanted to do was kill the poor animal, then even showed a picture of his bloody corpse. I will never look at your blog again, and I'm sure that you have turned away other readers by your words and actions.
