Bedtime Chit-chat

December 4, 2009

This is how my bizarre, rollercoaster of a day ended.  I had just read Kate a story, The Brave Little Taylor [once upon a time it was my book], and then we said prayers together.  So we’re rocking and cuddling a little, and Kate looks up at me thoughtfully.

Kate:  Mom, if God and Jesus are so important, why don’t they just talk to us?

Insert my startled look here.

Me:  Well, Kate, that is an excellent question.

Now I’m grasping for a simple way to explain this.  Nothing easy or suitable for a 5-year-old is coming to me.  And I’m tired and fried from a super crazy day.  So I revert to the tried and true strategy of:  deflect.

Kate:  Well?

Me:  Kate, that is an excellent question that requires more time than you and I have right now.  How about if you ask me that on a weekend day, and then we’ll sit down and chat about it, OK?  But really, honey, that is a wonderful question.

Kate:  [looking at her Disney Princess calendar] Well, Mom, I’m planning on sleeping in on the 5th.  After I get up, would that be a good time?

Oh. My. God.

Me:  Kate, that will work out just fine.  Just make sure you give me time to have my coffee first, OK?

Would anyone like to join me for coffee and theology on the morning of Saturday, December 5?  RSVP in the comments.
